Common questions
How many questions are on the California real estate exam?
The salesperson exam has 150 multiple choice questions with a 3 hour time limit. The broker exam has 200 questions with 4 hours. Every practice exam on this site matches those conditions exactly.
What score do you need to pass?
Salesperson candidates need at least 70 percent, which is 105 of 150 questions. Broker candidates need at least 75 percent, which is 150 of 200. These practice exams score against the same marks.
Are these actual questions from the state exam?
No, and no honest practice site can offer that. The DRE treats reproducing real exam questions as examination subversion. Every question here is original, written from the 2026 Real Estate Law and related public sources, in the style and weighting of the real exam. Each answer cites the statute it rests on.
Do I need an account or do these cost anything?
No. All twenty exams are free with no sign-up. Your scores and progress save in your own browser and never leave your device.
How are the exams weighted?
The DRE publishes exactly what share of the exam each of seven content areas takes, from Practice of Real Estate at 25 percent down to Transfer of Property at 8 percent. Every exam here follows that outline question for question.
What happens if I fail the real exam?
You can retake it. The DRE places no limit on how many times you may sit the exam during the two years following the date it received your original examination application, though each attempt has its own fee. After that two-year window you have to file a new application. The results page here ranks which content areas would recover you the most points, which is the fastest way back.
Can I use a calculator on the real exam?
Yes, within limits. The DRE permits silent, battery-operated, pocket-sized electronic calculators that are not programmable, and it supplies the scratch paper, since written computations may only be made on paper the Department furnishes. Cell phones are prohibited outright, including during breaks. Every math question on this site is solvable with a basic calculator.
